BENGALURU: China has overtaken India in attracting engineering and research & development captive facilities of global firms for the first time in two years. During the third quarter of 2017, Beijing attracted nine captives or global in-house centres, while India saw eight such centres announced by local and global companies, said a report by HfS Research.
The firms that have set up R&D centres in China include BMW, which opened research unit in Shenyang. Of the nine firms, three of them have committed investments of around $930 million. At the same time, of the eight firms in India, three companies have disclosed investments of around $443 million.
“Apart from the proposed new captive facilities, China saw a higher expansion of existing captives as well during the third quarter. This can be primarily attributed to an increased focus on industrial R&D,” Pareekh Jain, senior vice president at HfS Research, told ET. Engineering R&D is a prominent part of the research captives set up by organisation in China, India and other companies.
Among the lowcost countries, a majority of the ER&D captive centres were announced in China, followed by Romania, and Brazil.” China has scored higher on automotive and consumer electronics exposure over other countries and India. Industry body Nasscom, however, said it would be difficult to draw a conclusion based on one quarter’s growth data.
R Chandrasekhar said even though China might an edge in hardcore manufacturing and automotive, but when it comes to softwareled activity businesses look forward to India.

然而，印度软件与服务业企业协会表示，很难基于一个季度的增长数据下结论。该协会主席主席R·钱德拉塞卡尔表示，即便中国在硬件制造业和汽车等领域领先于印度，但就由软件主导的活动而言，业内企业仍在对印度寄予厚望。
